Fife City Council discussed alternative designs for a transportation project, which aims to alleviate freight and vehicle traffic using the Port of Tacoma Road and Interstate-5 (I-5) interchange.
Engineering consultants from Berger/ABAM presented a possible alternative design for the interchange called a “diamond couplet” to council members on Jan. 12. This alternative design would cost an estimated
$50 million and would decrease traffic waiting times at stop lights, allow for pedestrian crossings, and could be completed in stages over several years. This alternative has received support from the Federal Highway Administration, who must formally approve the plans before improvements can be made to I-5 because it is owned by the federal government.
This meeting was only informational and council members were not asked to make any formal decisions regarding the project.
