The Port of Tacoma began streaming its commission meetings and study sessions live via their website March 20.
Web streaming is part of an effort by the port to make their activities more accessible and available to the public.
The public will also be able to view previously recorded meetings, search through the video archives for specific topics, and watch other port videos, such as the quarterly Port Report and historical video. The content and live meetings will be available at www.portoftacoma.com.
“Delivery over the internet will ensure greater access to our meetings and will also provide the public with better understanding of the port’s decision-making process,” said Port Commission President Dick Marzano.
The port has contracted with Granicus, Inc., based in San Francisco, to provide the web casting services. Granicus has subcontracted with A.C.T. Video in Fife to manage the production of the meeting videos.
The port has also been working with Rainier Communications Commission to rebroadcast commission meetings and study sessions on Comcast and Click! cable TV. The port is also discussing with Click! the possibility of including other port videos, such as the Port Report, in the cable company’s video-on-demand service.
“Our goal is that that (TV broadcasts) would start up in April,” said communications manager Rod Koon, who is overseeing the project. “I think it’ll be a good step in terms of making news developments at the port more readily accessible.”
Leading up to the premiere of the web-streaming program, crews worked to set up and position the room’s five cameras. Each of the cameras has 20 preset views to capture close-ups of commissioners, staff or speakers, as well as different angles to capture groups or individuals. An A.C.T. Video employee will sit in the back room, adjusting angles and switching between cameras during each meeting.
“Our goal is obviously to have adequate coverage,” Koon said.
The Port of Tacoma commission approved the web casting and television program Dec. 20, 2007. The cost to purchase, install and operate the system during the first year will be $170,000.
“The Port of Tacoma is committed to making our public meetings as open as possible,” Marzano said. “Web streaming and cable broadcast will also promote a better understanding of the port’s business and our role in the economic vitality of our community.”
