This fall, the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department and the cities of Milton, Edge-wood and Fife will sponsor  “Natural Yard Care” workshops for area residents. The workshops are a collaboration between the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department’s Natural Yard Care program and each city’s public works department.

The Natural Yard Care program promotes environmentally sensitive landscaping practices through outreach and education efforts. The cities are subject to Environmental Protection Agency rules that regulate stormwater and these workshops are one way they seek to raise awareness among the public to protect stormwater and reduce potential contaminants.

These workshops will address yard maintenance is-sues including natural lawn care, soil basics, garden design and fall planting techniques, pest management practices with less-toxic controls and backyard composting.

Residents are invited to hear advice from local experts, access useful information and resources, and enter to win door prizes.

The workshops will be presented as a series with different topics and speakers on Sept. 17, Oct. 1, and Oct. 15 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. For more information, call (253) 798-4587 or  e-mail grinehart@tpchd.org.
