A family of six lost everything when their home was destroyed in a fire Saturday evening. Firefighters from East Pierce Fire and Rescue were called to the home on the 500 block of 13th Avenue in Milton at 7:30 p.m. Smoke alarms alerted the family, who evacuated the home before the firefighters arrived.
The first firefighters on scene reported that smoke and flames were visible from the one-story home. Acting Battalion Chief Marc Lash said that windy conditions played a part in fanning the flames. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, but the 900-square-foot home was a total loss.
Lash said that the family had a place to stay Saturday night. The American Red Cross is providing additional assistance and neighbors have begun a drive to help the family get back on their feet. It is unknown if they had renters insurance. No injuries were reported.
Although the investigation into the fire is on going, Lash said the probable cause is a drone battery pack that was charging in a bedroom at the back of the house.
“That’s the second house fire in less than a year that was caused by a battery being charged,” he noted.
